Angel City Adds New Beer, Saazberry, to Year-Round Offerings

Angel City Brewery has added a curiously-flavored ale to their lineup.

The new beer, Saazberry, is an interesting beverage, that is inspired by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The first half of its name comes from Saaz hops, while the latter half comes from a trio of berries. And it stands out, visually, owing to a bright violet color from the berries.

The result is an interesting mix of earthiness from the Saaz hops, a very solid malty backbone, and a bright and slight tartness from the purée of raspberries, blueberries, and elderberries included. While it’s on the bitter side for a berry beer (25 IBU), it’s nevertheless a fascinating new beer for the year-round offerings at Angel City and fairly easy to drink at 4.8% ABV.

“It was about a year ago when we came up with the idea for SaazBerry without any real intention of making a big deal about it. We just loved the concept and loved the name” said Layton Cutler, head brewer at Angel City Brewery. “Not long after it was on tap at the Public House, we realized we had a total hit on our hands. We’re thrilled to finally be bringing it outside the brewery.”

The fifth beer to join Angel City’s year-round family, Saazberry joins Angel City IPA, Pilsner, LAger and Citrus Wheat. This fruity beer is now be available year-round throughout Southern California on draft and in 6-packs and will be available at most Ralphs, 7-Eleven, BevMo and Total Wine locations.

A sample of Saazberry was furnished to the author for review purposes.

Beer is The Answer at Screens 'n' Suds Big Event

When most beer geeks look at their elixir filled glass, one either gazes at or thinks of ways to unmask it. Evaluating and demystifying to find the purpose or wonder of that particular beer. Tonight for the Screens N' Suds 'Big Event' held at The Answer Brewpub, side project of An Mekong of Mekong Restaurant fame. The only answer needed to this question is hand made craft beer.
