Delicious Cask Ales at MacLeod Ales for Their 3rd Anniversary

With a warm day outside, the atmosphere at an LA-area brewery was cool for their anniversary party this weekend.


Amidst 90-degree weather, MacLeod Ale Brewing Company celebrated their 3rd anniversary yesterday with dozens of beers available. While they poured over a dozen of their own beers, there were also over 20 guest beers in casks. There was a packed house at MacLeod Ales, with attendees squeezing by each other to get more beer – clearly, a lot of people wanted to celebrate and enjoy! To accompany attendees’ celebrating, there was enjoyable live music, and even, at one point, a bagpiper playing.b2ap3_thumbnail_20170618_143733.jpg

As it was my first time at MacLeod Ales, I was curious to try their own beers, three of which I want to highlight:

 - There's Naething Like A Talisker (8.4% ABV), a barleywine aged with oak soaked in Talisker whiskey, sounded interesting as a “light” barleywine, so I had to try it. It turned out to have a fairly thin body, as one might expect from a “light” barleywine, but it was pretty maltily sweet and yummy, with darkfruits and somewhat boozy. I could drink this beer all day-long, especially as a barleywine for warm weather.b2ap3_thumbnail_20170618_140133.jpg

 - There Lies the Mist on Yonder Hill (6.1% ABV), a wee heavy(ish) with cognac oak chips, tasted barleyish, as one might expect from a wee heavy. While this was not that heavy of a beer, I suspect that it was meant to be a summery, lighter version of a wee heavy. It was a very smooth beer that was quite pleasant and easily drinkable, with some apple juiceyness and booziness in the finish.

 - In the Deep Silence of the Woods (5.4% ABV), a campfire stout, which had a slight sense of booze, despite the low alcohol content, with noticeable vanilla, and was enjoyable to drink.

All of the beers available from other breweries on cask were tasty and they were quite a treat. One of the fascinating aspects of these cask ales was that they didn’t have the typical CO2 in them and, as such, were not as sharply-bubbled, causing them to be softer for the mouthfeel, which was intriguing. Amongst them, I wanted to highlight a half-dozen of them which stood out to me (in alphabetical order, by brewery):

 - Dry River Brewing’s Sour Lady, a wild ale (with undisclosed ABV), that had a very refreshingly pleasant tartness. This beer had a delicious tartness coming from a noticeable inclusion of lactobacillus, and was berrily fruity. While there were a few sours at the event, this one certainly stood out for its tartness (and deliciousness).

 - Eagle Rock Brewery’s Milo (5% ABV), a pale ale that was juicy, hazy, and citrusy, as well as grassy and dank. Basically, it was awesomely delicious (and, yes, great for warm weather).

 - Enegren Brewing Company’s Daniel Iron (8% ABV), an imperial oatmeal stout with coconut and cacao nibs that was so delicious! It was a touch boozy and deliciously full-flavored chocolatey, with some dark fruits. This was an awesome beer and I greatly appreciated it.

 - Figueroa Mountain Brewing’s Davy Brown with coconut and chai (6% ABV) was so delicious, especially with its tasty spices. I’m not typically into brown ales, but the additions of coconut and chai were very welcome! This is a fascinatingly tasty beer.b2ap3_thumbnail_20170618_144849.jpg

 - Ladyface Ale Companie’s IPA with El Dorado, tangerine, and habañero (5.9% ABV) was a very refreshing beer. Between its light, citrusyness from the tangerines, as well as the kick at the end from the habanero (but not intense), made this quite an enjoyable beer, especially in the warmth of the summer.b2ap3_thumbnail_20170618_151402.jpg

 - Yorkshire Square Brewery’s Castle Dangerous, an 8.5% ABV export stout, had a lot of sweetness of the darkfruits variety, along with some coffee flavor. It was certainly a pleasant quaffing.



As mentioned above, I really enjoyed these cask ales, which were quite a treat for their softer mouthfeel. It was, of course, a fascinating concept to have the cask ales from different breweries of a variety of styles, exposing attendees, including myself, to enjoy them. I greatly enjoyed it and, if the crowds are any indicator, so did many other people.
