Looking to get some brown, nutty and chocolatey flavors in your beer?

Rogue Brewing’s got a new beer out this year that brings those flavors in an unmistakable way. Their new Hazelutely Choctabulous (5.7% ABV) is actually fusion of two of its beloved beers, Chocolate Stout and Hazelnut Brown Nectar.

“For over a decade, our hardest-core fans and loyal pub patrons have been drinking this blend, which they say tastes like a nutty chocolate candy bar,” said Rogue President Brett Joyce. “We’re thrilled to share this secret menu item with the world.”

Hazelutely Choctabulous is composed of 60% hazelnut brown nectar ale brewed with natural flavor and 40% chocolate stout brewed with chocolate. One is welcomed by a lovely chocolatey nose with sweet caramel, which was a very enjoyable aroma. On the palate, though, it is very different, as there is quite a significant amount of bitterness, accompanied by some hazelnutty chocolateyness.  The finish is bitter with chocolate - a lingering bitterness that ultimately drops off with hazelnut.

It was certainly quite the brown beer, with a lot of brown-ish flavors. Also, this beer may be too bitter for some people - my drinking compadre did not like how bitter it was, but it was fine for me. One thing I do have to point out is that while it is advertised as a "candy bar in a bottle", it does not taste like a candy bar. Perhaps if there was less bitterness, it might taste more candy bar-like, as one would expect more sweetness to come from candy.

Nevertheless, Hazelutely Choctabulous is an interesting beer with lots of fascinating flavors.

Beer is The Answer at Screens 'n' Suds Big Event

When most beer geeks look at their elixir filled glass, one either gazes at or thinks of ways to unmask it. Evaluating and demystifying to find the purpose or wonder of that particular beer. Either the brewer had the intention, the mistake, or the unknown with said brew. Labels can only take us so far into the imagination or process and concoction of said brew. Tonight for the Screens N' Suds 'Big Event' held at The Answer Brewpub, side project of An Mekong of Mekong Restaurant fame. The only answer needed to this question is hand made craft beer.
