A new brewpub opened up recently in Anaheim that is already a hot spot to visit before Angels’ games.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company opened up a new satellite brewery and brewpub in Anaheim on August 22nd and is located directly across the street from Angel Stadium. Yes, directly across the street!

For Karl Strauss Brewing, which is based in San Diego, this is the company’s second brewpub in Orange County, with the first being in Costa Mesa.  The Anaheim satellite brewery increases the company’s brewing infrastructure to ten brewery locations in southern California, including their main production brewery in Pacific Beach. Equipped with a 7-barrel brewhouse, two fermentation tanks, and three brite tanks, this brewery has the potential to produce more than 35 unique releases of fresh, small batch beer brewed on site. “We’re excited to expand our small batch program. We give our brewers the freedom to experiment on our satellite systems and it’s proven very helpful in landing our next big release, like Aurora Hoppyalis or Mosaic Session IPA,” said Matt Johnson, Brewmaster, Karl Strauss Brewing Company.

The small batch program allows each of the brewpubs to brew beers unique to their location. For the Anaheim location, they currently have Dippity Dark English Mild Ale (3.6% ABV), a dark English mild ale, and Golden State of Mind (6% ABV), a Belgian blonde ale, which were created by the location’s brewer, Steven Hicks. “I have free rein of what I want to brew, as long as it’s not out of season,” said Hicks. “I get to come up with the names and the recipes are all my own.”  Hicks said that it’s a great set-up for a brewer with a smaller system, yet working for a bigger company: “It's nice because I have an unlimited supply of what I want to brew with.”  As to which beers he likes to brew there, Hicks said that “I like to fill in the gaps of what Karl Strauss doesn't have in its core beer lineup.”

The brewpub layout features a tasting room-like bar area with 24 taps for guests to enjoy an ever changing list of rotating beers. Behind the bar are “beer to go” coolers enabling guests to grab cold, fresh 6-packs and 22oz bombers in addition to growler fills. Next to the brewery is a growler-filling station to accommodate high demand for fresh, draft beer on game days. With reclaimed wood and exposed brick, the space has an industrial feel that includes garage doors which open to a large outdoor patio overlooking Angel Stadium. “This location feels open and inviting and relaxed,” pointed out Jason Torres, the founder of BierBuzz.

With Anaheim being the hot spot for breweries in Orange County, with the most breweries out of any municipality in the county, Karl Strauss is in a prime location for those searching for beer, especially beer tourists.  “This location is the perfect setting for socializing with friends over a freshly-brewed, locally-made craft beer from an independent brewery,” says Matt Rattner, President & Co-Founder, Karl Strauss Brewing Company.

Open 7 days a week, the new brewpub is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm, while the bar stays open an additional hour later Monday-Saturday. There is a happy hour 3-6pm Mondays through Fridays with half-off of pints under 8% ABV, while 8% ABV and above beers also have reduced pricing. In keeping with what other Karl Strauss locations do, every Thursday at 6pm, they tap a new cask beer, which is a treat.

Beyond the beer, the new brewpub has great food offerings, especially appropriate for a bar, such as pretzels, burgers, and more.  What’s also cool is that a handful of their foods are made with Karl Strauss beer!

It’s a great location to check out for its open-air atmosphere, especially its patio that gives visitors a direct view of Angel Stadium.  And it should be a must-visit location for anyone going to an Angels game!

Beer is The Answer at Screens 'n' Suds Big Event

When most beer geeks look at their elixir filled glass, one either gazes at or thinks of ways to unmask it. Evaluating and demystifying to find the purpose or wonder of that particular beer. Either the brewer had the intention, the mistake, or the unknown with said brew. Labels can only take us so far into the imagination or process and concoction of said brew. Tonight for the Screens N' Suds 'Big Event' held at The Answer Brewpub, side project of An Mekong of Mekong Restaurant fame. The only answer needed to this question is hand made craft beer.
