LA Homebrewers Rally Gives Great Opportunity to Connect and Learn

Encouraging homebrewers to connect with each other in the LA area and to discover resources was the focus of a recent event.

Giving homebrewers the chance to connect with commercial craft brewers as well as other beer enthusiasts and homebrewers in their area, the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) held a rally yesterday afternoon. Hosted at Brouwerij West, the AHA rally offered attendees the opportunity to take a VIP tour of the brewery, meet Brouwerij West brewers and staff, enjoy beer samples and win great prizes.

The event was a rather laid-back opportunity for attendees to connect with each other, and check out homebrewing opportunities in the area, with a couple of homebrewing clubs and homebrew supplies shops represented at the event. While there were no homebrews present, attendees were able to enjoy a couple of Brouwerij West beers. The two beers being poured for attendees were refreshing unfiltered beers, both appropriate for the weather at 5% ABV. Popfuji, an unfiltered pilsner, and Switcheroo, an unfiltered pale ale, were both enjoyable and flavorful beverages to accompany the event.

Brewery tours took place every half-hour, and were significantly more in-depth than a typical brewery tour, due to the audience, which turned out nicely. “A lot of times, homebrewers ask questions where they already know the answer and they're kind of trying to stump you and it can get a little bit tedious, but everybody was into it and had a good time,” said head brewer, Jeremy Czuleger, who led the tours. “Our brewhouse is a little bit different than the typical brewhouse in that we have a mash filter, so people were wanting to learn about that and were curious about that, not necessarily trying to flex with their homebrew knowledge,” added Czuleger.

AHA hosts a series of AHA Rallies nationwide to give homebrewers the chance to check out some of their local breweries and connect with other beer enthusiasts and homebrewers in their area. This event came about through the catalyzing effort of Dan Parker. Parker, the vice-president of Strand Brewers Club, spoke with Matt Bolling of AHA at a rally in November at the Liberty Station location of Stone Brewing, whereupon he “asked him if he’d be interested in doing an LA rally and said, ‘Yeah’, but he didn’t know where to do it,” said Parker. “Living here in San Pedro and this is my local spot, as big as it is, I said, ‘I know the perfect place.’” Parker also had known that “the owners were homebrewer-friendly”, so he made the connection.

According to the AHA website, “each rally is different, and many also feature homebrew competitions and tastings, wort giveaways, the opportunity to make a beer with the brewery, educational seminars and more.” Additionally, “AHA Rallies are member-exclusive events for current AHA members only. Current members are admitted free of charge. Non-members may join the AHA for a discounted rate at the door.”

AHA has worked on behalf of the homebrewing community since 1978 and celebrates a membership of more than 46,000 homebrewers. AHA is part of the Brewers Association, whose Brewers Publications division is the largest publisher of contemporary and relevant brewing literature for today’s craft brewers and homebrewers.

Beer is The Answer at Screens 'n' Suds Big Event

When most beer geeks look at their elixir filled glass, one either gazes at or thinks of ways to unmask it. Evaluating and demystifying to find the purpose or wonder of that particular beer. Either the brewer had the intention, the mistake, or the unknown with said brew. Labels can only take us so far into the imagination or process and concoction of said brew. Tonight for the Screens N' Suds 'Big Event' held at The Answer Brewpub, side project of An Mekong of Mekong Restaurant fame. The only answer needed to this question is hand made craft beer.
