Four Sons Brewing Second Anniversary

A lively anniversary event hosted by a Southern California brewery demonstrating their growth took place this past weekend.

 Having celebrated their one-year anniversary for one day last year, Four Sons Brewing expanded the festivities for their second anniversary over the course of two days. Taking place at their brewery and tasting room in Huntington Beach, the event also got to feature the newly-expanded tasting room, which opened up a second serving area several months ago.b2ap3_thumbnail_Food-trucks.jpg

Entering into the festivities, one was greeted by a lively DJ playing upbeat songs in their parking lot. The rest of the parking lot had been turned into a mingling and eating area, with food trucks parked there, alongside tables and chairs for eating.  At the end of the parking lot were a few games, including cornhole. Arriving into the main tasting room, one quickly notices the line going out the door for beer-ordering, as well as all of the tables taken. And this was during the daytime, when it wasn't as hopping at night.  The adjoining tasting room was open, as it usually is on weekends, and all of the tables were occupied, as well.  Clearly, this event was a popular attraction, even during an afternoon.

A great event for both newcomers and regulars, Four Sons Brewing's second anniversary event was a popular place to be.  According to Jessica Kuiper, head of marketing for Four Sons Brewing, there were "about 1700 people over both days." Speaking with one regular, Jeremy Escalante, he said that while it was busy in the daytime, the event go "really packed in the evening."  Escalante said the event was really good and that they split up the beer releases well, with a new beer released every hour on the hour for five hours each afternoon.  "It's a good lineup and a good mix that I wanted to be here both days."b2ap3_thumbnail_Corn-hole.jpg

While Four Sons Brewing kept their main beers available, the special beers for release were Bourbon-barrel aged beers, sours, and others. It was such an exciting event that each day had beers getting tapped out.  They tapped out of the Bourbon barrel-aged Triple Chocolate Stout (which was on a constant pour for nearly a half-hour before being tapped out(!)) and Special K I. The Special K I, a sour blonde with black currants, is a really popular beer. “Every time we release Special K I, people go crazy over it,” said Dustin Dufresne, one of the "four sons". Fortunately, Dufresne said, Four Sons Brewing will be putting out a can release of Special K I in the coming weeks.  The 2nd Anniversary Sour, That Orange Wrapper, and Special K III all ran out the second day, according to Kuiper.

I started off with the Special K III (7.9% ABV), a sour blonde with Luxardo Cherries & Meyers lemon, which I found to be pleasantly tart, especially at the end of the palate and into the finish.  While I could detect some citrus, I found the Luxardo to be overpowering, but I find that, as well, with cocktails involving Luxardo, so that's not a huge surprise. I also had their 4sb2 (6.3% ABV), a Brett sour aged in Bourbon barrels which smelled and tasted of oak throughout, yielding to some funk at the end, which was interesting. b2ap3_thumbnail_Second-Anniversary-Beer.jpg

Their 2nd Anniversary Beer, a 13.9% ABV Sour Blonde with passion fruit and hibiscus was released both days and was quite tasty. It was very full-flavored and offered a slight tartness, especially from the passion fruit. Granted, I am partial, since I quite enjoy passion fruit in sour beers, but the florality imparted by the hibiscus was also a fun addition. It was also sweet in a sort of candy sweetness sort of way, and sort of orchard fruity. Due to its higher ABV, it was served in 6oz glasses, although the booziness was not readily apparent when tasting it.b2ap3_thumbnail_BBA-Triple-Chocolate-Stout.jpg

As much as I enjoy tart, funky, and sour beers (and I did enjoy them), it was their stouts that were tremendously exciting to me.  That Orange Wrapper (8.4% ABV), a chocolate peanut butter stout, was served on nitro and was creamily delicious as well as providing a richness of the chocolate and peanut butter flavors.  However, the beer that I kind of lost my mind over was their Bourbon barrel-aged Triple Chocolate Stout with peanuts. This deliciousness clocked in at 13.6% ABV and was also served in 6oz glasses. It had a delicious maple syrupy booziness to it, due to its high ABV, and lovely flavor imparted from the Bourbon barrels, on top of the incredible chocolateyness. I am glad I left when I did, otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to make it home if I continued to drink this lovely beer.

Two other beers served over the weekend, not already mentioned, were Triple Crown Line (IIPA w/ whiskey soaked cherries) and Bourbon barrel-aged Late Night Candy Run (sour stout).

If you missed the opportunity to taste these delicious beers this past weekend, have no fear: Four Sons Brewing plans to put the special releases on-tap in the weeks to come, so stay tuned for when they become available.

At one point during the festivities, the DJ pointed out that, if their one-year anniversary was celebrated for one day and their two-year anniversary was celebrated for two days, what happens when they get to their fifth anniversary?  His suggestion, albeit somewhat tongue-in-cheek: five days of festivities! With delicious beers that they were serving up over the weekend, I think that would be an enjoyable idea.
