LA on Tap at Fairplex

Calling all bier geeks—in honor of American beer week, let us embrace the phenomenal craft brews that we enjoyed last weekend at LA On Tap!

Craft beer has an uprising scene, especially in beautiful Southern California. It’s no surprise then, that LA on Tap at the Fairplex in Pomona on May 9th attracted many different types of beer drinkers. The crowd varied from newbies to the craft scene, to seasoned enthusiasts and the occasional visitor in it for the “likes.” It’s safe to say that every beer aficionado there had their own creative spin on what defines the craft. This event in particular showcased over 65 fine breweries, with many that were just awarded medals at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition in 2015. LA on Tap allowed attendees the opportunity to taste these winners and more while also eating great food and enjoying live entertainment. New English Brewing Company from San Diego, California certainly earned the spotlight at LA on Tap as they took home the title, “Best of Show.” We’re excited to share more about their award-winning brew with you, as well as many others that rocked the weekend.

New English Brewing Company: Zumbar Chocolate Coffee Imperial Stout

New English Brewing Company brought their Zumbar Chocolate Coffee Imperial Stout, a collaboration with Zumbar Coffee & Tea also located in San Diego. Zumbar not only won “Best of Show,” it took a gold medal in the coffee beer category at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition of 2015. This perfectly crafted Imperial Stout is brewed with “El Mundo” Indonesian and Latin American coffee beans, rounded with a ton of Belgium Dark Chocolate. Nugget Hops were added to create a pleasant bitterness offsetting that powerful union of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. The overall flavor is dominated by coffee, balanced by hops, and assisted by chocolate.

Coachella Valley Brewing Company: Monumentous

As a homage to the wondrous Joshua Tree National Park, Coachella Valley Brewing Company from Thousand Palms conjured up a wonderful West coast style Double Rye India Pale Ale. Monumentous was awarded a gold medal in the Rye Beer category at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition of 2015, making it a great brew to have at this event. Hopheads rejoice, the IPA is hopped five times with Pacific Northwest and New Zealand hops. It had a very hop forward aroma followed by an intense hoppy, earthy taste. There is a sweet citrus flavor followed by a well-rounded malt after taste. This beer is meant to be experienced fresh, so don’t let it go to waste.

Ritual Brewing: Extra Red Ale

Ritual Brewing from Redlands poured their Extra Red Ale, which was a silver medal winner in the Los Angeles International Beer Competition in the American Style Amber/Red Ale category. No surprise here—this isn’t your ordinary red ale style. Extra red indeed, this beer is clearly defined by its malt flavor. Over eight different malt varieties were used to create this full flavor spectrum. Even with so much malt complexity, the beer has clearly distinct layers giving you the toffee and caramel flavors defined by the red ale style. To balance such a malty beer, Ritual Brewing added a plethora of hops to give you an in your face SoCal style red ale.

Inland Empire Brewing Company: Inland Empire Brown Ale

Inland Empire Brewing Company’s Inland Empire Brown Ale was a Bronze medalist in English Style Brown Ale in this year’s LA International Beer Competition. This English Nut Brown Ale has all the right components making it just brilliant. This beer has an aroma of caramel, toffee, brown sugar and earth-like aromas. Inland Empire’s Brown Ale carries a sweet malt and caramel flavor with that West coast hop twist. Each sip you can taste the roasty bitterness that fuses together in harmony! This is a great session-able beer. It’s overall a solid, highly drinkable beer. If your looking for a satiable brown ale, we highly suggest Inland Empire Brewing Company’s Brown Ale.

Barley Forge Brewing Company: The Patsy

If you made it to the Pomona Fairplex for LA on Tap, we sure hope you stopped by the BierBuzz® tent for a special treat. We were showcasing The Patsy, a Coconut Rye Stout. The Patsy is brewed with a ton of English specialty malt, UK pale malt, Munich malt flaked and chocolate rye grains. This hefty stout is marvelously balanced with dark chocolate and coffee, as well as bounteous amount of coconut. The taste of chocolate, roasted malt, coconut and hint of coffee will bring me back to the tasting room soon.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to try each of the 150 different brews that were poured at this fantastic event for Southern California breweries and the loyal patrons who support them.
