With Father's Day coming up this weekend, what goes better than something to drink to celebrate?

And, of all beverages, beer is a fitting one when thinking of fathers.  Whether one is a father oneself or spending time with one's father on Father's Day, which beers go well for the occasion?  Here are a few that can help make your Father's Day festive.

A popular beer out these days is the cleverly named Not Your Father's Root Beer, the name of which is sure to appeal to those who are looking for something different than what their father drank.  And this beer, produced by Small Town Brewery (La Crosse, Wisconsin), is certainly quite different than the root beer one can find in supermarkets in soda form.  In addition to its alcohol content (5.9% ABV), it differentiates its taste from a soda in its dynamic flavors - making one think about what root beer really ought to taste like rather than the bland root beer sodas on supermarket shelves.  Selling itself as a dark spiced ale (with vanilla and honey notes), Not Your Father's Root Beer is huge with anise as a root beer should be and is not only flavorful, but enjoyably sweet, as well.  This is an enjoyable beverage, whether on Father's Day or any other day.

For those looking to drink an IPA on Father's Day, there is the amusingly named Big Daddy IPA.  This is an awesome name for a beer, especially for those who may be on the heavier side.  Produced by Speakeasy Brewing (San Francisco, CA), the Big Daddy IPA is an appropriately big and drinkable IPA. Clocking in at 6.5% ABV, the Big Daddy has a great light, straw color accompanied by a grassy aroma with tropical notes.  The smoothness on the palate also brings with it a calmer grassiness than on the nose and some breadiness. (I don't recommend drinking this beer following the Not Your Father's Root Beer, as the flavors of the previous beer can drown out the subtler notes of the Big Daddy IPA.)  In addition to the sharp - but not too sharp - carbonation, with some roundedness, this beer also has an appropriate bitterness to it.  If you are looking to go bigger or, let’s say you have two children (twins?), Speakeasy Brewing also offers the Double Daddy DIPA.

While there may be other beers that have “father” or “dad” in its name, oftentimes, fathers can have quite a few years on them.  A name that reflects the age that can come with fatherhood is reflected in oldness, causing me to choose Old Rasputin.  A Russian Imperial Stout, Old Rasputin is a big, flavorful beer that can conjure up an older father figure.  Produced by North Coast Brewing (Fort Bragg, CA), this beer is no lightweight (9% ABV) and has some good roasted chocolate tastiness to it, amongst other flavors. And just like an old man, it brings an appropriate amount of bitterness, especially on the finish. In case you’ve got a bitter old man, this beer will help you out ;)

Whether you prefer a heavier stout or any number of lighter beers, here’s to cheers to your old man or even your fatherhood!
