Shock Top Makes a Pretzel-y Beerin Products
Having pretzels with beer? What about a pretzel-y beer?
This is what Shock Top aspires to do with their Twisted Pretzel Wheat. From the moment the scent of the beer reaches one's nose, there is no denying that this beer contains pretzelness. While it's unclear whether there are any actual pretzels in this beer, it is quite clear that this beer is meant to emulate the aroma of pretzels.
After the very pretzely nose (but appropriate), the taste of the beer does not put the pretzelness to have as prominent a place. Nevertheless, the pretzeliness of the flavor remains throughout this beer. This beer, which is identified as a Belgian-style beer, although I'm not sure how Belgian-y it is, although it is certainly a dark wheat beer. Just as one would expect with a pretzel beer, there is not a strong presence of hops, allowing the bready body to take over.
One friend who tried it with me described this beer as being "great at the movies", since it tasted a little bit of buttery popcorn. It is an amusing beer on account of this two-in-one aspect, whether one would drink it with popcorn or even with pretzels, it is an interesting idea to combine the flavors into the beer, rather than merely eating these foods alongside the beer.
With its lightly pretzel-y finish, while drinking this beer alone, it certainly makes one hungry for pretzels!
