Angel City Releases Baltic Porter & Amarillo Single-Hopped Sour Ale

Looking for two very different new beers? Angel City Brewery has got you covered, as they recently released a tart sour and a Baltic porter.

These two distinct beers will have your winter drink needs covered, with the Baltic porter perfect for seasonal sipping and the second a quencher for warmer days.

The first of these two beers, Sunbather #2 (4.2% ABV), is a single hop sour ale, featuring Amarillo hops. With a slightly hazy golden yellow appearance and a refreshingly tart taste, Sunbather #2 is perfect to enjoy while soaking up the LA sun, or hosting a holiday party. It has a light citrus, almost grapefruit aroma. As soon as it hits one's tongue, dry tartness is immediately noticeable, with dry grapefruityness on the palate that lingers all the way throughout on into the finish.

Last winter, I had the pleasure of tasting the first batch of Sunbather, which I greatly enjoyed. That first batch featured Citra hops, which is one of my favorite hops, so it was hard for this one to compare. Nevertheless, it is still a solid tart sour ale and works well for warm weather days. For those of us in SoCal, that’s not uncommon.

The second of the duo is Baltic Porter (7.2% ABV), an exceptionally dark beer with a black opaque appearance and slightly smoky aroma. Unlike traditional porters, Baltic porters use lager yeast which results in a velvety smooth and slightly sweet beer. I greatly enjoyed this beer, which has an enjoyably soft mouthfeel, immediately noticeable as soon as it enters one's mouth. This beer is appropriately dry (though nowhere near as dry as the sunbather). Also, there is a noticeable touch of booziness.

It also seemed to have both coffee and chocolate flavors, with coffee underneath the licoriceness. The finish has a nice licoriceness and appropriate dryness. Featuring notes of dark chocolate, licorice, and toasted bread, this porter is brewed with a variety of malt, including pale chocolate malt, wheat, beechwood smoked malt, CaraFoam and black pearl. This is certainly a pleasant beer, especially for the winter.

“We are continuing to expand our canning program, and this double beer drop of Baltic Porter and Sunbather #2 is an excellent addition to the lineup,” said Layton Cutler, Head Brewer at Angel City Brewery. “Baltic Porter is typically bottled, so it will be nice to have an easy-to-sip and carry can package for drinkers to bring to holiday events.”

Disclosure: a 16oz can of each of these two beers were provided to the author for review purposes.
